Diamond

Diamond have been in use for a long time as a tool material. Documentation exist from Pliny's the Elder (year 77) using it as a tribological tool (engraving). Due to its extrem material propertis is has a potential use in a wide technological area from semiconducting to mechanical applications. In the field of wear resistant material diamond has some properties listed below. But since its pure carbon there are also areas where diamond does not perform like cutting steel (carbon diffuse in to the steel  and is worn fast). There differnt form of diamond that are in use for industrial applications. The first material used was natural single crystalline material. In 1953 ASEA managed to produce syntetic diamond true high pressure and high temperature. This technology also created PCD (polycrystalline diamond compacts) which is a combiantion of diamond particles and metal that have been sintered togheter. Later scientists discovered that it is possible to produce CVD (chemical vapour deposited) diamond from gases creating a polycrystalline material mad eof 100 % diamond crystals.

Some properties of diamond

  • Ultra low friction coefficient
  • Extremly wear resistant
  • Hardest material known
  • Highest thermal conductivity of all materials
  • High thermal shock resistance
  • Extremely high chemical resistance

Nova Diamant uses CVD diamond which is pure polycrystalline diamond, not to be compared to PCD diamond which contain a metal binder. This is a material that is grown in a vaccum chamber directly into the desired shape. As source material Methan is used which then is dilutet to 1% in hydrogen. this mean that larger components can be coated with diamond and new applications can be developed.
